In January, actress Kerry Washington shared with fans that she will be releasing a memoir this year. Now fans are getting a look at the book.
The UnPrisioned actress took to social media to share what seems to be a trailer for the book. “Still trying to grasp how I feel about this cover being out in the world,” she shared in the caption. “I am sooooooooo EXCITED for you all to see it. And I’m GRATEFUL to all of you who have expressed interest in reading this book that I poured so much of my heart into.”
Thicker Than Water will release September 26th. The cover is a painted oil on linen portrait. It shows Washington under the surface of a body of water as her reflection faces her. The actress tapped artist, Reisha Perlmutter for the cover. Perlmutter is known for her intimate portraits of women in water.
“As I was writing the book, stories about water kept presenting themselves and I realized how fundamental water and swimming have been in my life,” Washington said in an interview with E! News. “Often when I am in water, I feel more connected to myself and my truth, so as I thought about creating a cover for this book, I felt that an image of myself underwater might help convey how much of my true self I am offering to readers.”
She also touched on her experience posing for the cover shoot. “This was, by far, the most fun I have ever had on a photo shoot,” she recalled. “Because I was in one of my favorite places in the world, doing one of the things I love to do most: swim and play in the water!”
Kerry Washington’s Memoir
On Washington’s birthday, January 31st, she sat down with PEOPLE Magazine to discuss her plans for the memoir. “Writing a memoir is, by far, the most deeply personal project I have ever taken on,” she explained. “I hope that readers will receive it with open hearts and I pray that it offers new insights and perspectives, and invites people into deeper compassion — for themselves and others.”
The memoir is set to show “an intimate view into both her public and private worlds — as an artist, an advocate, an entrepreneur, a mother, a daughter, a wife, a Black woman.”
