Denzel Washington speaks on his relationship with the late Whitney Houston after appearing on screen together almost 30 years ago during The Preacher’s Wife.
During a conversation with Chaz Ebert, Roger Ebert’s widow, at the American Black Film Festival, the actor talked about his achievements and the amount of time he spent with Houston on and off the screen before her untimely death in 2012.
He revealed that he was very protective of Houston. “I always felt like I wanted to protect her. You know? She wanted to be so tough, but she really wasn’t,” he said. Washington have been vocal about how he felt about the “I Have Nothing” singer in 2012 interview.
Washington talked about how hard Whitney Houston worked to overcome her drug addiction, which she would succumb to at the age of 48. “Whitney was my girl, and she had done so well in recovery. And that is the toughest part about addiction. And that was a monster drug that got a hold of her, it was a mean one. You can’t go back to that one. Nobody beats that.” he said.
Whitney Houston passed away in October 2012 in the bathtub of her Beverly Hills Hotel room. Her death was ruled an accidental drowning with the effects of atherosclerotic heart diseas and cocaine use.”
As the conversation with Ebert continued, Denzel Washington said that his career is about to face a huge transition that can leave fans “devastated.” “The things that are going on professionally for me behind the camera are as important to me now as in front of the camera. I think there’s less and less time I’ll be spending in front of the camera.”
