R. Kelly’s legal team is fighting to have his sex crime case overturn by the U.S. Supreme Court.
According to reports, Jennifer Bonjean, Kelly’s lawyer, is arguing that due to the 2003 launch date of the PROTECT Act, her client’s actions from the previous decade should not be apart of his misconduct that happened decades ago.
The PROTECT Act was signed into law by then-president, George W. Bush and it eliminated the statutes of limitations for abduction and abuse cases that involved children. The Supreme Court will decide on whether they will hear Kelly’s appeal in the coming months.
R.Kelly is currently serving a 20-year sentence for inducing minors to engaged in sexual activities, and producing child pornography. These offenses took place from 1991 to 2018 while he has been under investigation by the Chicago Sun-Times since August 2000.
He was also convicted of 6 of 13 counts in 2020. Three of them were for child pornography and three for inducment counts. Along with his sentence, the singer was also ordered to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages to his victims.
