Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin are joining forces for their first faith-based film under a new Netflix partnership. The project, titled R&B, is a modern retelling of the biblical love story of Ruth and Boaz. This collaboration marks a significant milestone for Perry and Franklin, both known for their commitment to producing films that explore themes of faith, resilience, and love.
A Modern Retelling of a Biblical Classic
R&B is set in modern-day Tennessee and follows a young woman who leaves the Atlanta music scene to care for a widowed elderly woman. In doing so, she finds love and forms a bond with the elderly woman, reminiscent of Ruth’s story from the Bible. “This is more than just a love story,” said Franklin, “it’s about the beauty of unexpected relationships and the grace found in caring for others.”
The film features an ensemble cast led by Serayah (of Empire fame) as the protagonist. Joining her are Tyler Lepley, Phylicia Rashad, Walnette Santiago, and renowned musicians Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds, Jermaine Dupri, and Lecrae Moore. “We wanted a cast that could bring depth to these characters while appealing to a modern audience,” Perry explained.
The Creative Team Behind R&B
Directed by Alanna Brown, R&B promises to be an emotional and inspiring journey. Brown, who previously directed Trees of Peace, has garnered critical acclaim for her storytelling. “Alanna brings a fresh and authentic voice to this project,” said Perry. “Her work on Trees of Peace showed us she has the ability to bring complex stories to life.”
Michael Elliot and Cory Tynan penned the script for the film, with Franklin and Perry serving as producers. Perry noted, “Faith-based films have a unique way of resonating with audiences, and we’re excited to present this new take on a classic story.”
With R&B, Perry and Franklin are poised to continue their tradition of impactful storytelling, now backed by the global platform of Netflix. Fans of faith-based cinema and modern love stories are eagerly awaiting its release.
