Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball made his long-awaited return to the court after a nearly three-year absence due to a severe knee injury. On October 16, Ball played in the Bulls’ preseason game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, marking a significant comeback after multiple surgeries.

Ball’s return came with a minutes restriction, allowing him to play just over 15 minutes. Despite limited time, Ball made his presence known, scoring 10 points on 4-for-6 shooting, including two 3-pointers. Reflecting on the game, Ball expressed gratitude for the moment. “It felt a lot better playing than watching, I’ll say that much. I was just blessed and happy to be out there,” Ball said.

A Remarkable Comeback

Ball’s journey to recovery was anything but easy. Initially injured in January 2022, the point guard underwent three knee surgeries, including a rare double cartilage transplant in March 2023. His return to the court has been nothing short of remarkable, as no player in major American sports has ever returned to action following such a procedure.

Reflecting on his long rehabilitation process, Ball said, “Long. Really long. But looking back on it, it went a lot faster than I thought.” He credited his belief in himself and the support from his medical team for helping him overcome doubts that he would ever play again.

Easing Into Action

The Bulls have been cautious with Ball’s return, placing him on a 16-minute restriction for the preseason. “It’s not the same body I started off with,” Ball admitted. “But I think I can still be productive and effective on the court. That’s why I’m still trying to play.”

Bulls coach Billy Donovan praised Ball’s basketball IQ, noting how the guard’s ability to “see things developing before they occur” makes him a valuable asset to the team. His teammates also celebrated his return, with Zach LaVine collecting the game ball after the win.

As Ball continues his return, the Bulls and their fans are hopeful that his journey back to basketball is just beginning.
