Montell Jordan, best known for his 1995 hit “This Is How We Do It,” has revealed that he successfully beat prostate cancer. The 56-year-old singer credits early detection, faith, and the support of his community for his recovery.
Early Detection and Faith Played Key Roles for Montell Jordan
“Early detection helped save my life,” Jordan shared in a heartfelt video posted on his birthday, December 3. Diagnosed with early Stage 1 prostate cancer in January, he immediately began exploring his treatment options. “I researched and reviewed all options [and] prayed hard,” he explained, eventually opting for a prostatectomy.
Following the surgery, Jordan received surprising news. “Once [my prostate was] removed, there was more cancer found in what was removed,” he admitted. The cancer had progressed to Stage 2, but doctors were able to remove it all. He added, “Jesus saved my soul. Early detection helped save my life […] I am now cancer-free.”
Jordan has been open about his journey, using his experience to encourage others. In a recent conversation with TMZ, he emphasized the importance of regular screenings. “Getting checked every year is super, super important,” he said. The singer believes that early action can be life-saving, particularly for Black men, who face higher risks of developing prostate cancer.
“You can either check or you gon’ get checked,” Jordan said. “It’s gonna happen either way. You can be in control of it though.”
Despite undergoing major surgery, Jordan remained resilient. Just two weeks post-operation, he joined Usher on stage during the Anaheim stop of the Past Present Future tour. “I’m pastoring different people right now,” he said, referring to the cancer survivors and patients he mentors. “We’re all in the same story, but we’re in different boats.”
In honor of his recovery, Jordan asked fans to support his documentary project chronicling his cancer journey. “It’s my way of giving back,” he said, highlighting his mission to raise awareness and inspire hope for those facing similar battles.
