Quinta Brunson is in some hot water, just days after making Emmy nomination history.
According to reports, the creator of the hit show Abbott Elementary and the ABC network are being sued for copyright infringement by actress and writer Christine Davis. In the lawsuit, Davis claims that Brunson’s show is a copy of her own show, This School Year.
In 2018, Davis claims that she wrote the script for her show and had it copyrighted in 2020 a year before Abbott Elementary premiered in December 2021. Davis’ lawsuit also states that the shows are similar and that the “look and feel of the inner-city school, the mockumentary style, unique plot synopsis, set design, and unique characters were copied from her script.”
Brunson nor ABC have not commented on this lawsuit yet. Abbott Elementary is nominated for seven Emmy awards. Quinta Brunson made history by being the first Black woman to be nominated for three comedy Emmy nominations in the same year. Those categories are Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Comedy Series, and Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series.
