For nearly four decades, October has been dedicated to breast cancer awareness. The month long campaign aims to promote screening and prevention of the disease, which affects 2.3 million women worldwide. Known best for its pink theme color, the month features a number of campaigns and programs — conducted by groups ranging from breast cancer advocacy organizations to local community organizations to major retailers.
For New Jersey, there are several walks for participants to join to make an impact. These events encourage mammograms, offer support and celebrate survivors and patients going through treatment. They also honor the memory of those who lost their battle with breast cancer.
