On January 24, we commemorate the birth of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg (1874-1938), the Afro-Puerto Rican scholar whose passion for African diasporic history transformed the field. Schomburg’s unparalleled collection of over 5,000 books, manuscripts, and artworks became the cornerstone of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. At 6:30 PM, join us for the annual Arturo Schomburg Lecture, where scholars from Fisk University and the Schomburg Center will delve into their work digitizing Schomburg’s archives. Moderated by Dr. Vanessa K. Valdés, author of Diasporic Blackness: The Life and Times of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, the conversation will reflect on his lasting influence. A dessert reception will follow, honoring Schomburg’s 151st birthday.
