San Francisco 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward shared heartbreaking news this week: his one-year-old daughter, Amani Joy, has passed away. Ward took to Instagram on Tuesday to honor her memory, calling her “the best blessing we could have asked for.” He shared, “We are heartbroken that our beautiful baby girl, Amani Joy, passed away on Monday morning.” He continued, “She overcame adversity at a young age and was always happy, lighting up every room with her smile.”

Charvarius Ward and His Love for His Daughter

Amani Joy, who was born in November 2022 with Down syndrome, also faced significant health challenges, including heart issues. Ward previously spoke about his daughter’s strength, describing her as a source of inspiration. “She showed us true strength and bravery,” he wrote. “Having the privilege of being her parents and seeing the world through her eyes has changed us for the better.” Amani’s joyful spirit, Ward said, taught him and her mother, Monique, “to have patience, trust, and a positive outlook on life.”

Ward had spoken openly about his experience as Amani’s father, describing it as transformative. In an Instagram post last March, he reflected on his initial fears about Down syndrome, saying, “I used to think Down syndrome was a handicap, but now I realize it is just a gift from God.” He said that Amani’s resilience helped him reframe his perspective. “She went from heart surgery to being the happiest kid I’ve ever been around,” he shared.

The 49ers Community Mourns

The San Francisco 49ers organization released a heartfelt statement expressing their sorrow and support for Ward and his family. “The 49ers family is devastated by the sudden passing of Charvarius Ward’s beloved one-year-old daughter, Amani Joy,” the statement read. The team remembered Amani as someone who “truly embodied pure happiness and brought joy to all those around her with her sweet demeanor and contagious laugh.”

Ward’s teammates and fans have since rallied around him, sending condolences and support. The 49ers, currently on their bye week, emphasized that they would continue to “grieve with Charvarius and Monique, while sending them our love and support during this unimaginable time.”
