A’ja Wilson was recently honored with the Sports Innovator Award at the WSJ Magazine Innovator Awards.
The event took place at New York City, MOMA and she was presented the award by actress Aubrey Plaza. The three-time WNBA MVP accepted the award on behalf of the WNBA as a celebration of the league’s impact and growth in sports.
During her acceptance speech, Wilson touched on the difficulty that the WNBA has faced while fighting to be properly recognized. She also gave credit to the basketball players who never gave up, and continued to persevere “especially when others don’t see the vision or deny your value,” she said.
She went on to joke about coming to New York after her team, the Las Vegas Aces, lost to the New York Liberty in the semifinals. “I’m going to be completely honest with you guys, I’m a bitter and sore loser,” she said jokingly.
Congratulations to A’ja Wilson!
