Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson made history Sunday night, becoming the first WNBA player to score 1,000 points in a single season. Wilson’s 29-point performance in the Aces’ 84-71 victory over the Connecticut Sun secured her place in the record books. A fadeaway jump shot late in the fourth quarter pushed her total exactly to 1,000 points, prompting cheers from the crowd at Michelob Ultra Arena.

Wilson’s achievement comes just days after she set the league’s single-season scoring record, surpassing Seattle Storm’s Jewell Loyd. With this historic milestone, Wilson continues to be the frontrunner for the 2024 WNBA MVP award, which would mark the third of her career. Wilson reflected on her journey with ESPN, saying, “I really try to pinpoint little things. Everyone can say, ‘I want to win a championship,’ but what are the little things you’re going to do to get to that point?”

Wilson’s Preparation and Dedication Fuel Success

Wilson, who averages a league-best 27 points and 12.1 rebounds per game, credits her offseason work for her incredible form this season. “I really have to credit my offseason work and my preparation. I take time to get away from basketball, to let me miss it,” she said. Her approach has clearly paid off, as she continues to dominate both ends of the court.

Aces coach Becky Hammon spoke highly of Wilson’s impact, both on and off the court. “It’s not easy to be A’ja Wilson every day. There’s a lot of expectation. The city is lucky to see her grow, not only as an unbelievable player, but also as someone who gives back to her community,” Hammon said.

As the Aces approach the playoffs, Wilson’s record-breaking performance highlights her commitment to excellence. “I’ve got work to do,” Wilson stated firmly. With two games remaining in the regular season, Wilson’s drive and focus will be critical in the Aces’ quest for a third straight WNBA title.
