Akili McDowell, Star Of ‘David Makes Man’ Charged With Murder

Television actor Akili McDowell, best known for his role in “David Makes Man,” was arrested and charged with murder in Houston. The 21-year-old actor was booked into Harris County Jail on August 1. According to online jail records, he is also facing theft charges.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez announced McDowell’s arrest on August 3. The incident occurred on July 20 in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Houston. Deputies responded to the scene and found 20-year-old Cesar Peralta with gunshot wounds. Peralta was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff Gonzalez stated, “The investigation is ongoing, and we encourage anyone with info to contact the Homicide Unit at 713-274-9100.” It remains unclear how McDowell was identified as a suspect or if he knew the victim.

McDowell gained fame for his portrayal of David in the OWN coming-of-age drama series “David Makes Man.” The series, created by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Tarell Alvin McCraney, also starred Phylicia Rashad and Isaiah Johnson. McDowell was featured by PEOPLE in 2019 as a “One to Watch,” highlighting his rising career.

In addition to his role in “David Makes Man,” McDowell appeared in “Billions,” “The Astronaut Wives Club,” and the films “Criminal Activities” and “The Waterboyz.”

McDowell is being held on a $400,000 bond for the murder charge. He has a court appearance scheduled for Monday, August 5. His court date for the theft charge is set for Tuesday, and he is due in court again on October 9 for the murder charge. Representatives for McDowell have not commented on the situation.
