Ashanti speaks on her proposal from her fiancé, Nelly.
The singer recalled that they were alone when the rapper surprised her with the proposal. She said that she was caught off guard and revealed that she was wearing a t-shirt and boxers while relaxing in the house when Nelly popped the question.
“It was just such a beautiful intimate moment… I had absolutely no idea,” she said. Ashanti admitted that she thought the proposal was going to happen sooner than it did. “I cried, I gave him the biggest hug and kiss ever, I facetimed everyone I know… I was overjoyed and shocked and surprised and happy, kind of all in one.”
Ashanti and Nelly first dated back in 2003. Their relationship would be on and off for a decade until they broke up in 2013. In 2021, the two reconnect at Ja Rule and Fat Joe’s Verzuz battle in New York City. However, it wasn’t until late last year that Nelly confirmed that he and Ashanti were officially together again.
The couple would later confirm that they were expecting their first child together after fans began to speculate. The “Rain on Me” singer shared how Nelly reacted to the news of becoming a father again.
“Never in a million years did I think we would be here… I always dreamed about pregnancy. I wanted it so, so bad and I just feel like the timing was perfect,” Ashanti said. “He was so happy and we were both smiling and it was so funny… I was actually at his mom’s house… He was in the studio. It was a really cool moment. It was a little bit of everything.”
