Doechii is at the top of her game but it wasn’t always the case.

In an interview with The Cut, Doechii explained how she dealt with suicidal thoughts while having a difficult time as a sixth grader.

“I don’t want to get super-dark,” Doechii said. “I was getting bullied so bad that I was thinking about killing myself.”

Changing her mentality was key to changing her life.

“I realized, ‘Oh, f**k I’m gonna kill myself and then I’m gonna be the only one dead.’ The bullies aren’t gonna be with me, and everything they said is not coming with me either,” she continued. “I would just be gone.”

“And then I was like, ‘F— that!’” Doechii. “‘F— that s—! I’m not going for that!’ And this wash of peace came over me, and I received ‘I am Doechii.’”

The “Denial Is River” rapper said that phrase came to her from God and made sure to write it down.

“But it was more like this feeling of — ‘I made a choice, a decision. I am the most important character in this movie,” she said. This is my motherf**king movie.”

She also detailed in the interview how she was inspired by Lauryn Hill and hopes her music has the same impact.

Overcoming her struggles, Doechii is one of the best rappers in the game. For her acclaimed mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal, she took home the Grammy for Best Album.

“The feeling that I have when I listen to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is the same feeling I want some other Black little girl to have when she listens to me,” said Doechii. “And in order for her to have that feeling, I have to talk about my feelings.”

Doechii won her first Grammy in the best rap album category for her mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal. In her acceptance speech, she reminded the audience that she was just the third woman to win the award along with Hill and Cardi B.
