Eddie Murphy is set to return to Shrek’s swamp with exciting news for fans. The beloved actor has confirmed not only the development of ‘Shrek 5’ but also a spinoff film centered on his character, Donkey.

Eddie Murphy’s Return to the Swamp

In a recent interview with Collider, promoting his new movie ‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,’ Murphy revealed the eagerly awaited details. “We started doing ‘Shrek [5]’ four or five months ago,” said Murphy, 61. “I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up.”

Murphy also announced the thrilling addition of a Donkey-centric movie. “Another Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie,” he shared, emphasizing the separate recording schedules for the two projects. “I think [Shrek 5 is] coming out in 2025, and we’re doing a Donkey one next.”

A representative for Universal has yet to comment on Murphy’s statements.

A Long-Awaited Return

The Shrek franchise, which began in 2001, includes four feature-length films and two spinoffs featuring Antonio Banderas’ character, Puss in Boots. The latest in this series, ‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,’ was released in 2022. The franchise follows the adventures of Shrek, a swamp-dwelling ogre voiced by Mike Myers, as he navigates friendships, foes, and love with Princess Fiona, played by Cameron Diaz.

Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri hinted at a Shrek revival back in April 2023. He confirmed plans to develop ‘Shrek 5’ with the original voice actors Murphy, Myers, and Diaz. “Every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return,” said Meledandri.

Murphy’s confirmation also fulfills his previous wishes to reprise his role as Donkey. Speaking to Etalk last year, he expressed his eagerness, saying, “I’d absolutely be open if they ever came with another Shrek, I’d do it in two seconds. I love Donkey.”

Excitement for Fans

Fans of Shrek can enjoy more of the swamp with the newly opened DreamWorks Land at Universal Orlando Resort. Attractions include Shrek’s Swamp Meet and Shrek’s Swamp for Little Ogres play area.

The announcement of ‘Shrek 5’ and the Donkey spinoff film promises a delightful future for the franchise. As Murphy stated, “Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots…he ain’t funny as the Donkey.”
