Elton John has revealed that he lost his eyesight after battling an eye infection.

While attending the gala performance of The Devil Wears Prada musical, the 77-year-old legend shared with the audience that he wasn’t able to watch the musical. “I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight,” John said, who wrote the music for the show. “So it’s hard for me to see it. But I love to hear it and boy it sounded good tonight.”

At the end of his speech, John thanked his husband for helping him get through this difficult time. In September, Elton John revealed that he went blind in one eye and had limited vision in the other one because of an infection. “I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye,” he said on social media.

“I am grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me over the last several weeks.” During the premiere of his documentary Elton John: Never Too Late in October, he informed the audience that he was struggling with other health issues besides losing his eyesight.

“To be honest with you, there’s not much of me left,” he said. “I don’t have tonsils, adenoids or an appendix. I don’t have a prostate, I don’t have a right hip or a left knee or a right knee. In fact, the only thing left to me is my left hip. But I’m still here.”
