WNBA star Brittney Griner pleads guilty to drug charges in a Russian Court and faces up to 10 years in prison.
According to reports, Griner left the courtroom without making any comments to reporters. It was reported that the two-time Olympic basketball gold medalist was arrested in February at an airport in Moscow after Russian officials found cannabis oil in her luggage.
Griner has since been held on drug smuggling charges which serves a punishment of 10 years in prison. The US State Department says that Griner has been wrongfully detained and her supporters have been fighting to have her released believing that she is being used as a political pawn after Russia invaded Ukraine.
We have reported that fellow basketball star, LeBron James has called for the release of Griner, as well as her wife Cherelle Griner. Cherelle recently spoke with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris about her wife.
“While I will remain concerned and outspoken until she is back home, I am hopeful in knowing that the President read my wife’s letter and took the time to respond,” Cherelle said. “I know BG will be able to find comfort in knowing she has not been forgotten.”
Brittany Griner’s guilty plea comes on the second day of her trial which began last week. We will keep you updated with this developing story.
