The Grammy Museum in Los Angeles will soon be home to a new exhibit, Luther Vandross: Artistry and Elegance, celebrating the life and legacy of the beloved R&B legend. Opening on November 20 and running through June 15, 2025, the exhibit is a tribute to Vandross’ monumental contributions as a singer, songwriter, music producer, and live performer. Visitors will get a rare look into his creative process, from his hand-drawn wardrobe sketches to handwritten sheet music for iconic hits like “Never Too Much.”
Kelsey Goelz, a curator at the Grammy Museum, shared her excitement, noting that “Luther Vandross is a cherished icon who defined the smooth, jazz-inspired era of R&B. His timeless love songs have graced countless weddings, graduations, and family reunions for the past several decades.” She emphasized the museum’s eagerness to showcase Vandross’ impact on music and culture, especially for fans who may not have had the chance to experience his live performances.
Exclusive Artifacts and Insights into the Creative Process of Luther Vandross
The exhibit will feature numerous artifacts from Vandross’ career, including his famously intricate stage costumes. Fans will see detailed, hand-beaded suits and jumpsuits worn by Vandross and his background singers during the Power of Love tour, as well as the original fashion sketches behind these designs. Other highlights include Vandross’ handwritten lyrics, rare studio notes, and six of his Grammy Awards, all of which showcase his meticulous approach to both music and visual presentation.
Longtime friend and collaborator Marcus Miller fondly recalled Vandross’ perfectionism and attention to detail. “Luther was a complete and utter perfectionist,” Miller said. “His shows were theatrical masterpieces, and he was involved in every detail of their production—from his vocals and harmonies to the gowns his background singers wore. The furs had to be real. I would say, ‘Luther, no one’s gonna know if the furs are real!’ He would reply: ‘I will know!’ That was part of the magic of Luther, his unyielding commitment to excellence.”
In addition to the exhibit, the museum will host an exclusive screening of Luther: Never Too Much, a documentary directed by Dawn Porter, which will premiere on CNN, OWN, and Max in 2025. Through this exhibit and film, the Grammy Museum aims to honor the unmatched artistry of Vandross and provide a lasting tribute to his enduring influence on music.
