At the 2024 Governors Awards on Sunday, November 17, Jamie Foxx paid tribute to the late Quincy Jones, presenting the legendary producer’s honorary Lifetime Achievement Oscar to his children. Jones, a seven-time Academy Award nominee and cultural icon, passed away on November 3 at 91, leaving behind a profound legacy in music, film, and advocacy.
“A Legend, A Friend, An Inspiration”
Foxx began his heartfelt speech by reflecting on Jones’ life and impact, calling him “a legend, a friend, [and] an inspiration.” Despite his 91 years, Foxx said, “still gone too soon.” He recounted how Jones had helped him embody Ray Charles for his Oscar-winning role in Ray. “I needed to know who the young Ray Charles was,” Foxx explained, adding that Jones gave him a cassette tape that became pivotal in his preparation.
Foxx also thanked Jones for his advocacy for those with Down syndrome, noting the personal connection through his late sister, DeOndra Dixon. “She was the first recipient of the Quincy Jones Exceptional Advocacy Award. For that, I’m forever grateful,” Foxx shared. He concluded, “Quincy, thank you for giving the world music, light, and an example of what a great human being should be.”
Quincy Jones Life of Love and Influence
Rashida Jones, speaking on behalf of her father’s family, delivered a moving speech, reading words her father had written in preparation for the event. Reflecting on his early dreams of composing for film, Quincy Jones had written, “I knew that creating music for film was something I longed to do.” He also acknowledged the progress in Black representation during his lifetime, expressing pride in his contributions to that evolution.
Rashida added her own heartfelt words, celebrating her father’s unparalleled legacy. “His music defined a century of culture,” she said. “But the real thread is his love, which infused every note.” She encouraged others to honor his memory by living with love, adding, “You lived the biggest, best, most beautiful life every single day you were here.”
Quincy Jones was laid to rest in a private funeral, and a public memorial is being planned. His extraordinary contributions to music, cinema, and humanity ensure his impact will be remembered for generations.
