Jamie Foxx speaks out against the removal of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) Plaza in Washington D.C.
He spoke about the efforts that Black Americans took to have the plaza built in the first place. The destruction of the mural began this week in Washington after Mayor Muriel Bowser was given the choice to have it removed or lose city federal funding.
The mural was installed in 2020 after the protests following George Floyd’s murder. Foxx stated that political artwork should remain for much longer, as it was planned to be a permanent staple. The actor commented under a social media post about the destruction, calling it a “drag.”
According to reports, the removal of the mural will cost $610,000 and will take up to 2 months to complete. In a statement, Mayor Bowser called Georgia Rep Andrew Clyde’s introduction of a proposal to change the name from “Black Lives Matter Plaza” to “Liberty Plaza” a “meaningless congressional interference.
