Janet Jackson has reportedly apologized after questioning Vice President Kamala Harris’ race.
According to reports, the singer’s manager, Mo Elmasri, said that Jackson apologized for “causing confusion,” and that she “deeply respects” Vice President Harris. “She deeply respects Vice President Kamala Harris and her accomplishments as a Black and Indian woman. Janet apologizes for any confusion caused and acknowledges the importance of accurate representation in public discourse,” Elmasri said. “We appreciate the opportunity to address this and will remain committed to promoting unity.”
A short while ago, we reported that Janet Jackson sparked controversy after suggesting that Kamala Harris’ ethnicity was Indian and Caucasian and not Black during a recent interview. When she was asked about the upcoming election, Jackson revealed that she heard that Harris wasn’t Black and that she was Indian.
“Her father’s white. That’s what I was told. I mean, I haven’t watched the news in a few days,” she said. “I was told that they discovered her father was white.” Kamala Harris has always identified as Black. Her father, Donald J. Harris, is a Black Jamaican retired economist and professor. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan who passed away in 2009, was an Indian biomedical scientist.
The singer was then asked if she believes that America is ready for a woman of color as president, to which she answered, “I don’t know. Honestly, I don’t want to answer that because I really, truthfully, don’t know. I think either way it goes is going to be mayhem… I think there might be mayhem. Either way, it goes, but we’ll have to see.”
