Cynthia Erivo may be flying across the promotional trail in support of ‘Wicked,’ but with her latest stop, she brought The Color Purple back into the spotlight.
The two actresses — who costarred on Broadway in the 2015 revival of The Color Purple — were together again on the Wednesday, Nov. 27 episode of The Jennifer Hudson Show, where they reminisced about their experience on stage and even broke into song.
In celebration of their history, the duo sang together, “What About Love?” from the Broadway play, their first time in almost a decade.
Before the song, the two became emotional after looking at several photos of their time in the musical.
“Why do I feel like I’m going to cry?” she said before the cries came, later telling Hudson that she was feeling emotional. While performing in a small theater in London, a producer approached her and asked if she would like to join the Broadway production. Erivo said she didn’t believe the producer until she had a plane ticket in her hand.
“It’s been a really long journey and that young lady there had no idea about what was in front of her,” Erivo told Hudson, about her role on The Color Purple. “She was trying to get through every show.”
Hudson then praised Erivo telling the audience, that the Wicked star “sang us down every night on that set of Color Purple live. I sat there and I watched her do it every night.”
“You earned your way here, young lady,” Hudson said. “So take it in and embrace it.”
