Jonathan Owens is eagerly anticipating the Summer Olympics in Paris, where he’ll support his wife, Simone Biles. As the Chicago Bears safety gears up for his own NFL season, he’s thrilled to witness Biles, the most decorated gymnast, on her third Olympic journey.

“It’s super exciting just because I get a chance to see all the work that she puts in prior to, and you know what? Everything she goes through and dealing with the media and everything, and she still goes out there and does it,” Owens shared in a recent interview with PEOPLE. “It’s just impressive and goes to her training mindset and consistency.”

Athlete’s Perspective

Owens appreciates Biles’ perseverance from his viewpoint as an athlete. “I love watching [it] from an athlete’s perspective because that’s how you’d be great in any sport, is just being consistent and doing the same thing consistently good every day,” he said. “You know what I mean? I love to watch it and I love to be out there and be a cheerleader.”

Sitting with Biles’ family during competitions, Owens has learned to keep score and understand gymnastics better. “I know the routines,” he said about his supportive role. “I’m getting the score down. If I’m going to pay attention to it, I have to lock in. I’m going to go full in … So I had to make sure I did some research so I can talk gymnastics language.”

Simone Biles and Jonathan Ownes Supporting Each Other

Owens will join Biles in Paris, with the Bears granting him a few days off from training camp. “The Bears are actually granting him a couple days off from training camp, so he’ll be there,” Biles confirmed after trials. “Yes, for just a short little time.”

Despite his own training schedule, Owens stays hydrated with GoodSport drinks due to his sickle cell trait. “Basically, when you’re at an oxygen deficiency you’re more cramp-prone. And being in the NFL, you have to be available as a starter. You can’t be on the sideline and be missing time,” he explained. “So I really had to take my hydration serious and make sure that I was putting the right things in my body that just would continue to let me perform.”

Owens’ first visit to Paris will primarily focus on supporting Biles. “I’m ready. I’m excited,” he said. “I can’t wait to watch.”

As the couple balances their athletic careers, their mutual support shines through. Owens’ enthusiasm as Biles’ cheerleader underscores the strength of their partnership on and off the field.
