Tyler Perry’s latest film, The Six Triple Eight, brings an inspiring yet lesser-known piece of American history to life. The movie, which premieres on December 20 on Netflix, stars Kerry Washington as Major Charity Adams, the commanding officer of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. This all-Black, all-female unit was the first of its kind to serve overseas during World War II, and Perry’s film aims to honor their legacy.

The Six Triple Eight is based on Kevin M. Hymel’s article “Fighting A Two-Front War,” and it tells the story of the 855 women who made up the 6888th Battalion. These women were responsible for delivering mail to soldiers on the front lines, ensuring that communication flowed during some of the most challenging times of the war. The battalion’s motto, “No mail, low morale,” underscores the vital role they played in keeping soldiers connected to their loved ones back home.

Perry was inspired to create the film after meeting one of the original battalion members, Lena King. “After one few-hour session with her, I had a whole script in my head,” Perry revealed. King, who was 99 years old at the time, passed away earlier this year. Perry noted, “She remembered everything about joining the 6888th battalion and delivering mail overseas.”

Washington’s Transformative Performance

Kerry Washington’s portrayal of Major Charity Adams has been widely praised. “You don’t see any Kerry Washington in this character,” Perry remarked. “It is phenomenal to see how she fell so deeply into it.” Washington herself expressed pride in the project, stating, “Tyler has done an extraordinary job taking this largely untold story and adapting it into a moving narrative work of art.”

Washington believes the film resonates deeply with contemporary audiences. “So many of us know what it feels like to be marginalized, underestimated, and tested,” she said. “This movie is about the magic of what’s possible when we join forces to meet life’s challenges head-on.”

The Six Triple Eight is not just a historical drama but a tribute to the resilience and determination of these unsung heroes. As Washington emphasized, “This story is about fighting for the American dream, even when others believe that the pursuit of that dream does not belong to you.”
