The Hulu series UnPrisoned, starring Kerry Washington and Delroy Lindo, has been canceled after two seasons. Washington broke the news via social media on September 27, expressing both disappointment and gratitude. The show, which premiered in 2023, was part of Hulu’s Onyx Collective and had become a fan favorite for its unique take on family dynamics and personal growth.

“That is a wrap on UnPrisoned,” Washington shared on X (formerly known as Twitter) and Instagram. “This beautiful show that we poured so much of our hearts and souls into is unfortunately not coming back for a Season 3. But I wanted you to hear it from me because while we’re super duper disappointed, we’re also crazy deeply grateful.”

The show followed Washington’s character Paige and her complex relationship with her father Edwin, played by Lindo. The storyline drew inspiration from the life of creator Tracy McMillan, whose personal experiences growing up in foster care and dealing with her father’s incarceration shaped the heart of the series.

Impact and Reception to Washington’s News

UnPrisoned was celebrated for its blend of humor and emotional depth, exploring themes of healing, forgiveness, and family. Washington noted the special connection many viewers had with the show’s characters, especially with the Alexander family. “We know that so many of you found connection and healing with The Alexander Family – and that their impact will live on!” she added in her post.

Despite its cancellation, the show achieved notable success during its run. Upon its premiere in 2023, UnPrisoned recorded the highest viewership for an Onyx Collective show on Hulu. Fans resonated with the show’s portrayal of a family facing challenges, but still finding ways to laugh and grow.

“Thank you to ABCS, Hulu & Onyx for giving us a creative home,” Washington concluded. “And most importantly, we are grateful to YOU ALL – for watching, laughing, crying, yelling, and dancing along with us each episode.”
