Grammy-winning artist Lizzo is set to portray Sister Rosetta Tharpe in the upcoming biopic Rosetta, marking her first lead acting role. Known for her powerhouse vocals and electric stage presence, Lizzo expressed her excitement on Instagram, writing, “Black people made rock n roll yeaaaah.” Fans and music historians alike are eager to see her bring Tharpe’s legacy to the big screen.

A Trailblazing Musician’s Story

Sister Rosetta Tharpe, often referred to as the “Godmother of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” was a groundbreaking musician who rose to prominence in the 1930s. She pioneered a unique blend of gospel music infused with electric guitar, a style that laid the foundation for rock ‘n’ roll.

Her influence extended far beyond gospel music, inspiring legendary artists such as Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Johnny Cash. Tharpe’s showmanship and musical innovations made her a pivotal figure in music history, though her contributions have often been overlooked.

In 2018, she was posthumously inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. During the induction ceremony, Alabama Shakes’ Brittany Howard honored her with a tribute performance, helping to reintroduce her music to a modern audience.

Film Development and Production Team

The biopic is currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios. Natalie Chaidez (The Flight Attendant) and Kwynn Perry (Tigerbelles) are collaborating on the screenplay, aiming to capture the essence of Tharpe’s legacy. Lizzo will also serve as an executive producer alongside Kevin Beisler, Nina Yang Bongiovi, and Academy Award-winning actor Forest Whitaker.

The film is expected to explore key moments in Tharpe’s life, from her early days as a gospel prodigy to her rise as a trailblazing rock ‘n’ roll icon. The biopic will highlight her struggles as a queer Black woman in a male-dominated industry and her groundbreaking 1951 wedding concert at Griffith Stadium, which drew thousands of fans.

With her deep appreciation for Black musical history and bold artistic expression, Lizzo is expected to honor Tharpe’s legacy with authenticity and energy.
