Martin Lawrence’s most popular film is getting a sequel.
As Deadline reports, “Blue Streak 2” is reportedly in the works, and it includes a reunion between Lawrence and Sony Pictures, who released the original “Blue Streak” film in 1999.
In the film, audiences saw Martin Lawrence playing a thief who goes undercover as a detective to retrieve a hidden diamond. The film opened No. 1 at the North American box office and went on to gross nearly $120 million globally.
The project is in early development, with no director or other cast members yet announced. While Lawrence is reportedly on board as a producer, there’s no official word as to whether he’ll be back as Miles. For now, it’s safe to assume the Bad Boys star will indeed be back in the role.
Lawrence most recently starred alongside Will Smith in Sony’s Bad Boys: Ride or Die. The franchise, which is in it’s 30th year, has surpassed $1 billion in lifetime box office. Both the original Blue Streak and Bad Boys movies were released just four years apart, reflecting a career pattern for Lawrence as he alternates between similar genres.
Lawrence is currently on his nationwide comedy tour You All know What It Is, which will run through March 2025. The comedy show is his first since 2016. “Comedy gives me that instant gratification,” Lawrence said in a press release. “Seeing the fans up close and in person, making people laugh, doing what I love most, this is what it’s all about for me. But hey…y’all know what it is!”
Lawrence, hailed by fans around the world as one of the greatest comics of all time, launched his comedy career in New York City at the Improv Comedy Club. His breakthrough film role came courtesy of Spike Lee in the classic Do The Right Thing! Other film roles followed including House Party and Boomerang. He soon captured the attention of mega producer Russell Simmons who tapped Lawrence to host the groundbreaking HBO series Def Comedy Jam. In 1992, Lawrence landed his own hit series Martin.
