Mary J. Blige is saying an emotional goodbye to her character, Monet Tejada, in Power Book II: Ghost. After four intense seasons, Monet met a tragic end in the series’ penultimate episode, dying to protect her children. Blige recently opened up about her journey playing the fierce matriarch of the Tejada family.

“It’s been a dream to join the Power family and play a character like Monet Tejada,” Blige shared in a statement to PEOPLE. “This character allowed me to show a woman on screen that I know well.” Reflecting on the strong-willed persona of Monet, Blige drew inspiration from real-life figures. “From the start, Monet reminded me of my mom and so many other mothers who had to be strong raising children in the inner cities.”

A Character That Left an Impact

Throughout the series, Monet had a complex relationship with her three children: Cane (Woody McClain), Dru (Lovell Adams-Gray), and Diana (LaToya Tonodeo). Her role as both the head of the Tejada drug empire and a mother added depth to her character. Despite the dangers surrounding her, Monet always prioritized her children’s safety, which ultimately led to her self-sacrifice.

Blige expressed gratitude for the fanbase that supported her throughout her journey on the show. “This final season has been amazing to watch with the fans, and I can’t thank them enough for being along for this ride,” she said.

Co-Star Reflections of Mary J. Blige and her Character

Michael Rainey Jr., who plays Tariq St. Patrick, Monet’s sometime ally and adversary, admitted he was deeply affected by the death scene. “I knew it was happening and everything, but I actually shed a tear,” Rainey said. “She went out trying to protect her kids. She came out with two guns… like, y’all not gonna kill my babies.”

The loss of Monet struck a chord with both the characters and viewers, marking a significant turning point in the series.

The series finale of Power Book II: Ghost is now streaming on Starz, closing a chapter in the Power universe with Monet Tejada’s unforgettable exit.
