Rapper and actor Method Man, widely known for his role in the Wu-Tang Clan, recently opened up about his struggles with depression. Speaking with fellow artist Fat Joe on the new Fat Joe Talks series on Starz, the 53-year-old revealed how his battle with depression has been a constant presence in his life.
“It never really goes away,” Method Man shared. “I have bouts with it, and things.” He emphasized the importance of checking on loved ones, especially when they come to mind. “Every now and then, when you get a thought like, ‘Damn, I wonder what this person’s doing,’ act on it. Call them, see how they’re doing… You have no idea how much that could mean to them.”
The Power of Connection for Method Man
During the interview, Method Man recounted a personal story of how a simple text message from a close friend, Dave, made a significant impact. “Dave saw that, and he just sent me a beautiful text message… and it spoke to me, big time,” he recalled. “All I could put was, ‘All of this,’ with a heart emoji. I don’t even get heart emojis, son, but yeah.”
These moments of connection, he noted, are crucial for anyone dealing with mental health issues. “You never know what someone’s going through. That message could be what helps them get through the day,” he added.
In addition to discussing his mental health, Method Man revealed he’s writing a memoir about his life, potentially titled Bring The Pain. “There’s a lot of pain in my life, and this memoir is about confronting it,” he explained. Despite his struggles, the rapper remains a beloved figure in the music world and admits he enjoys some of the admiration. “I love the admiration. But sometimes, you just want to blend in with everybody else.”
Through his candor, Method Man continues to spark important conversations about mental health and the significance of reaching out to those who may be struggling.
