A handwritten love letter from an 18-year-old Michael Jordan to his high school girlfriend, Laquetta Robinson, is currently up for auction. Dated May 20, 1981, the two-page note offers an intimate look into the future NBA legend’s teenage years. Jordan, then a senior at Laney High School in Wilmington, North Carolina, expresses deep affection while emphasizing basketball’s significance in his life.
A Glimpse into the Heart of Young Michael Jordan Heart
In the letter, Jordan writes, “Laquetta, you are my whole life next to basketball. Please don’t get mad about that statement. You are my whole life, but you can’t have basketball.” He continues, “One day I hope to make a living of this.” These words reflect his early dedication to the sport that would later define his career.
The letter is part of the 2025 Lelands Winter Classic Auction, with bidding starting at $10,000 and currently surpassing $11,000. The auction runs through March 15, offering collectors a chance to own a unique piece of Jordan’s personal history. Lelands describes the item as “one of the most amazing Michael Jordan items we have ever seen.”
This isn’t the first time Jordan’s personal correspondence has attracted attention. In May 2020, a 20-page letter he wrote to another woman sold for $25,703 at Iconic Auctions. The current letter has appeared in previous auctions but failed to meet its reserve price. Its resurfacing offers fans another opportunity to acquire a rare artifact from Jordan’s formative years.
The letter not only highlights Jordan’s youthful romance but also underscores his unwavering commitment to basketball. He promises Robinson, “Next year, I will show you things you can’t believe.” Indeed, the following year, Jordan hit the game-winning shot in the NCAA championship game as a freshman at the University of North Carolina, marking the beginning of his illustrious career.
