Nelly wanted to make sure that Ashanti was more than a “baby mama.”
While on The Bootleg Kev Podcast, the rapper explained why he decided to marry Ashanti shortly after she revealed that she was pregnant. “Once we found out that she was pregnant, I was just like, yeah- We hadn’t talked about any of that yet,” the rapper said. “But I was like, ‘Yo, you know what. Let’s just knock this out because we’re gonna be doing so much, and everything’s moving so fast.’ And I didn’t want her to be a baby mama.”
Nelly spoke about how they reconciled since their breakup over ten years ago during the Verzuz between Fat Joe and Ja Rule. “I didn’t want it to be tense,” he said. “We didn’t even talk. I just went over, got a hug to break the ice. We didn’t talk for another almost eight to nine months to a year. We didn’t have a conversation.”
The host, Kev, shared his perspective about the “right person” and “wrong timing,” which Nelly agreed with. “I base any relationship on does this person bring more good to your life than bad.” He continued, “I think from me and her, after we got a chance to talk and was like, ‘Yo a lot of this s**t that we was b******g about, we cool. We were way more happier than we thought being pissed off was.”
Ashanti gave birth to her first child, Kenkaide “KK” Haynes, with Nelly last year. KK is Nelly’s third biological child. He also adopted his niece and nephew after the passing of his sister in 2005.
Ashanti also revealed that they are looking to expand their family.
