Nicole Evers-Everette, granddaughter of civil rights legend Medgar Evers, has been found safe.The 36-year-old is currently in the hospital recovering as per an update from the NAACP. This news arrives after five harrowing days of her disappearance, which sparked widespread concern and a frantic search,
Prior to the announcement, both police and the Georgia National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP, pleaded for help finding Nicole “Nicole is a beloved member of our community, and the entire Georgia NAACP is committed to bringing her home safely,” the Georgia NAACP said on its website.
Last seen on Sunday, September 22, Nicole vanished from her Duluth apartment, leaving her loved ones in distress. She was last heard from around 5:55 p.m. that evening.
The Gwinnett County Police Department asked for help finding Nicole Friday morning and said a friend reported her missing on Tuesday. The friend said they hadn’t heard from Nicole for several days.
When officers went to her home to try to speak to her, they couldn’t find her, the police department said in a news release online. As days passed without contact, concern grew exponentially.. Nicole’s car was spotted on Monday night in McDonough, Georgia, over an hour away from her Duluth home. This sighting only added to the mystery surrounding her disappearance.
Reena Evers-Everette, overcome with worry, made a heartfelt plea to the public. “I am worried and terrified for my daughter, Niki,” she stated in a news release.
Reena said she speaks to her daughter regularly so when she can’t reach her, it’s concerning. Her daughter left without her cell phone, purse or other items.
Medgar Evans
Nicole Evers-Everette is the granddaughter of Medgar and Myrlie Evers. Medgar served as the field secretary for the Mississippi branch of the NAACP while his wife worked with him to protest segregation, lynching, and more within the state of Mississippi.
Medgar was killed on June 12, 1963 in the family’s driveway in Jackson. His widow, Myrlie, saw to it that her husband’s killer, Byron De La Beckwith, was convicted in 1994. Prior to the conviction, two all-white juries refused to convict the man.
