Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes shared his thoughts on President Donald Trump attending Super Bowl LIX, calling it an “honor.” Speaking to reporters ahead of the big game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Mahomes acknowledged the significance of a sitting president attending the event.
Patrick Mahomes Reacts to Trump’s Attendance
“It’s always cool to be able to play in front of a sitting president,” Mahomes said during a press conference. “Someone that is at the top position in our country.”
Trump’s appearance at the Super Bowl marks the first time a sitting president has attended the game. While Mahomes has avoided making political endorsements, he expressed appreciation for the recognition from Trump.
“It’s cool to hear that he’s seen me play football and respects the game that I play,” Mahomes added.
Mahomes’ teammate, tight end Travis Kelce, also weighed in on the president’s attendance, echoing a similar sentiment.
“That’s awesome. It’s a great honor,” Kelce said. “I think, no matter who the president is, I know I’m excited because it’s the biggest game of my life. Having the president there, it’s the best country in the world. So, that’d be pretty cool.”
With the Chiefs aiming for their third consecutive Super Bowl victory, both players emphasized their focus on the game rather than any political aspects surrounding it.
Mahomes has remained nonpartisan despite Trump’s previous praise. When asked about his stance on endorsements, Mahomes reiterated his belief in voter education.
“I don’t want my place and my platform to be used to endorse a candidate,” Mahomes said in September. “I think my place is to inform people to get registered to vote. It’s to inform people to do their own research and then make the best decision for them and their family.”
Super Bowl LIX, set to take place at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, will see the Chiefs face off against the Eagles in a historic matchup. Fans can expect an exciting game, with performances from Kendrick Lamar and SZA during the halftime show.
