Prince will finally be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This announcement, made by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce on June 25, comes more than eight years after his death on April 21, 2016. The Walk of Fame Class of 2025 also includes notable names like Jane Fonda, David Beckham, and Fantasia.

Despite his legendary status, Prince never had a star on the Walk of Fame while alive. He was approached twice about receiving this honor but turned it down both times. According to Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez, Prince felt he was “not ready” for the recognition.

The Path to Posthumous Recognition for Prince

Rules for posthumous stars differ from those for living celebrities. A two-year waiting period is required after a celebrity’s death before they can be nominated. Additionally, the family or estate of the deceased must consent to the nomination. This “mourning period” allows time for reflection and ensures the honoree’s family supports the decision.

Following Prince’s death, a lengthy battle over his estate delayed the process. This dispute, resolved in August 2022, could have contributed to the delay in his nomination. Now, with his estate’s consent, Prince will receive his long-overdue star.

Ceremony Details and Other Honorees

An official date for Prince’s star ceremony has not been set yet. Once a celebrity is selected, they—or in this case, Prince’s estate—have two years to schedule the ceremony. If not scheduled within this period, the application expires, according to Martinez.

Prince’s induction is particularly significant as only one posthumous star is awarded annually. Jimmy Jam, Grammy-winning producer and Prince’s high school classmate, expressed his excitement during the announcement. “Prince, yes, sir! You’re watching from above but you’re gonna be right down here with us to celebrate,” Jam said.

The 2025 class features celebrities from various categories, including motion pictures, television, radio, live performance, and sports entertainment. Inductees include Jessica Chastain, Nia Long, Fran Drescher, Lauren Graham, Bill Nye, Green Day, and Misty Copeland.

With seven Grammys, an Oscar, and numerous other accolades, Prince’s impact on music and culture is undeniable. His star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame will serve as a lasting tribute to his extraordinary legacy.
