Trick Daddy, rapper turned radio host, says he no longer identifies as African American.
Over the weekend, on Instagram Live ,Trick revealed to his fans that he only wants to identify as “American.”
“I’m trying to figure out how ‘Afro’ get in front of my motherf***ing race,” he relayed.
“I ain’t never been to Afro-ca. I have never been to Africa. Afro or Africa. Never been there. I’m not from Africa. I was born and raised in Goulds, Florida. I was born in Goulds, raised in Liberty City in the Pork-N-Beans projects. Ain’t never went to Africa, ain’t thinking about going there. And I heard it’s a beautiful place, yes. And I know it’s the motherland, yes. But not my mother, not her mother, and not her mother’s mother, that ain’t their land. Americans’ real true land is right here, on U.S. soils.”
As defined by Britannica, “African Americans are largely the descendants of enslaved people who were brought from their African homelands by force to work in the New World.”
“Many people often default to ‘African American’ out of a desire for either political correctness or politeness,” according to CBS News. Both black and african american are often used interchangeably, the report states. “But that isn’t always accurate, and it’s important to understand the nuance when discussing race both in America and on a global scale.”
Trick’s comments arrive at a time where conversations around culture and social politics are boiling. Last week’s November 5th, U.S. presidential election saw the first woman of color candidate Kamala Harris defeated by political polarizer Donald Trump.
