R&B singer Ray J recently opened up about a dark and life-altering moment during a revealing interview with Pastor Jamal Bryant. The interview, released on The Jamal Bryant Podcast: Let’s Be Clear, showcased the 43-year-old’s candid reflections on his struggles with mental health and identity.

Ray J Detailing His Attempt

Ray J recounted an incident in Cancun, Mexico, where he nearly ended his life. “I was hanging off the roof of the hotel in Cancun,” he shared. “I climbed off the roof, and I went to the side. I laid down and said, ‘If I fall off, then it was meant to be.’”

The “One Wish” singer revealed he slept on the ledge for approximately two and a half hours before hotel staff discovered him. Following this, he underwent medical evaluations. This episode marked his first suicide attempt, though he admitted to struggling with suicidal thoughts for years.

Speaking on the weight of living inauthentically, he said, “You want to make your family proud, but you’re living a lie.” Ray J described his public persona as a “character” and admitted to feeling like a “liar,” grappling with the shame that came with it.

A Week of Turmoil and Reflection

The release of the interview followed a contentious week for the artist. Initially, Ray J threatened Pastor Bryant, demanding the interview not be aired. “If y’all play that interview, somebody getting snatched off the pulpit,” he warned in a heated statement.

Pastor Bryant responded with surprise, emphasizing that the interview was edited to remove any potentially damaging remarks. Days later, Ray J apologized for his outburst, acknowledging his actions were “unbelievable” and “disgraceful.”

“I apologize to you and the whole church community,” he stated in a heartfelt Instagram video. “What I did might be unforgivable, but I want you to know I’m sorry.”
