Former “Rap City” host, Hans ‘Prime’ Dobson has passed away. Dobson hosted the BET show from 1989 to 1993.
According to All Hip Hop, Dobson passed away from after suffering from liver issues. The outlet referenced a relative’s Facebook post, “He was 55 years old and suffered from liver issues that had him waiting on the transplant list.”
Rap City” became well known for playing Hip-hop music videos, hosting legendary rappers during the prime time of their careers, and debuting exclusive freestyles from artists like A Tribe Called Quest, The Diplomats, 50 Cent, Trina, OutKast, JAY-Z, Ludacris and others.
Sam Walker II, former BET VP of music productions, spoke to AllHipHop to share more about his memories with Dobson. He said he was a fan and a colleague of the former host He also served as the executive producer of the “Welcome To Rap City” documentary.
“I had the opportunity to be a fan of Prime’s as a teenager watching ‘Rap City’ and its many hosts, to later working with him in my role as a producer on the documentary, ‘Welcome To Rap City,’” he tells AllHipHop. “He was a true fan of Hip-Hop music who, unbeknownst to most, was the driving force that led to the creation of a vehicle that launched so many careers, ‘Rap City.’
“As a person, he was filled with life and energy, and his passion for urban culture was second to none. So, I am happy we were able to give him his flowers while he was still with us. He truly personifies how one individual, with the right idea, at the right time, can help spark an entire movement.”
In 2023, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of hip hop, BET premiered an original three-part documentary of the iconic music series, “Welcome To Rap City.”
Over three consecutive nights, the special featured some of today’s Hip Hop stars, behind-the-scenes movers & shakers, and the original “Rap City” hosts who cemented this show into Hip Hop history. The premiere featured a reunion of all of the hosts from the beginning in the mid 80’s to the end in 2008 including Big Tigger, Big Lez, Chris “The Mayor” Thomas, Hans “Prime” Dobson, Prince DaJour, Joe Clair, Mad Linx, J-Nicks and Q45.
