The Jones family is mourning an unimaginable loss as boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. announced the death of his son, DeAndre Jones. The 32-year-old passed away by suicide on Saturday, June 22.
Roy Jones Jr.’s Heartfelt Statement
Roy Jones Jr., 55, took to Instagram on Monday, June 24, to share the tragic news. “Unfortunately, my son DeAndre took his life on Saturday,” Jones wrote. The boxing icon expressed deep gratitude for the time spent with his son just before his passing. “I’m so thankful that God allowed me to come home Friday night to spend the last night of his life with me and the family.”
Jones addressed the struggles many people face, emphasizing the value of life. “I know a lot of people are going through tough times right now, but nothing is worth taking your own life,” he wrote. “God gives it and God should be the one to take it away.” He asked for privacy as his family processes the loss. “Please respect our privacy while my family and I process this loss. Thank you for the love and support.”
DeAndre was one of three children Roy Jr. shares with his wife, Natlyn Jones. The couple also has two other sons, Roy III and DeShaun Jones.
An Outpouring of Condolences
Following the heartbreaking announcement, friends, colleagues, and fans flooded social media with messages of support. “My condolences brotha,” wrote comedian Martin Lawrence, accompanied by three praying emojis. UFC champion Mike Swick also expressed his empathy, saying, “I was in a very similar situation when I was young and feel your pain and confusion. I couldn’t agree with you more! Stay strong Champ!!”
Former boxer Amir Khan shared his sorrow, writing, “My deepest condolences brother I am so sorry. Praying for your family.”
Roy Jones Jr. is celebrated for his illustrious boxing career, spanning multiple weight classes from lightweight to heavyweight. With 66 victories, including 47 by knockout, he is considered one of the greatest fighters of his era. He retired from professional boxing in February 2018 after a remarkable 29-year career.
