Russell Simmon’s accuser is challenging his retirement.
According to reports, the accuser known as Jane Doe, has asked the judge to reject his “claim that he can’t be sued in New York because he is a stateless U.S. citizen now retired in Indonesia.”
The claim states the “defendant is running from the court’s jurisdiction to avoid taking accountability for his actions.” The claims also say the court should have “serious doubt” about his claim. Jane Doe also said that Simmons still pays rent for his Manhattan apartment for his children and has an office space in New York for his TV company.
She says that Simmons’ activities do not match the claims of him being retired and points out that retirement is the main key to having an Indonesian visa. “Any purported retirement visa requires recertification every few years that one is, in fact, retired. Building an empire and being retired are mutually exclusive,” she wrote in her filing.
Doe also says that the resort where Russell Simmons is staying is a business that he co-owns with American investors. She also provided evidence of Simmons saying that his home is the U.S. from an interview earlier this year.
“People saying that I somehow can’t come home when I’m there all the time wears on you,” Simmons said in the interview. “It wears on me after a while to keep hearing the same narrative, which is false. I’m always in L.A., I’m always in New York and Miami. And I’ve never had any reason to feel unsafe in America.”
Jane Doe sued Russell Simmons in February for allegedly “obstructing the advancement of her career due to harassment.” Doe worked as a music executive and video producer at Def Jam until their relationship allegedly turned violent.
