School Bus Hit By Gunfire In The Bronx

A New York City school bus carrying special needs children was unexpectedly hit with multiple gunshots on Friday, Mar 21.

Students, between 5 and 9 years old, were forced to duck for cover near East 163rd Street and Trinity Avenue in the Morrisania area of the Bronx.

The bus was parked and picking up kids at the time of the incident. The driver heard the gunfire, and some kids fled on foot, according to police.

Police say two rounds hit a rear panel of the bus and shattered a window.

According to ABC 7, Jose Polanco, a coworker of the bus driver, says the driver told him he kept driving because his first thought was to get the children somewhere safe.

“He was scared about those kids because all those kids in the shootout,” Polanco said.

ABC 7 NY confirmed that no one was injured.

The outlet noted that four suspects, wearing all black, were shooting at each other and the bus got caught in the crossfire.

The shootout prompted an immediate lockdown, sheltering nervous students and staff in place for about 30 minutes past dismissal.
