Jay-Z and his Shawn Carter Foundation (SCF) are committed to educating HBCU students to empower them for the future.

With support from Toyota Motor North America, the Foundation has launched Champions for Financial Legacy (CFFL), a financial education program aimed at empowering HBCU students.

As per the official release: “CFFL aims to reduce the growing wealth gap by equipping students with the financial knowledge and skills needed for economic success and social mobility. Topics include budgeting, market risks and returns, mutual funds, credit scores, stock markets, and more. By fostering financial fluency and community engagement, the program seeks to change the trajectory of intergenerational wealth and build a more equitable future.”

Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, founded the Shawn Carter Foundation in 2003 with his mother, Gloria Carter.

“Every day at the Shawn Carter Foundation, we dedicate ourselves to uplifting students and communities that are underserved,” Gloria Carter said in a statement. “To launch a financial education program that will reach more students and communities, along with dedicated partners like Toyota and the Wharton School of Business, is a vision we are finally seeing come to fruition.”

The curriculum, developed in collaboration with the Coalition for Equity and Opportunity at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, covers essential topics such as budgeting, credit scores, market risks and returns, mutual funds, and the stock market.

The inaugural CFFL program will kick off spring 2025 at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, Norfolk State University in Virginia and Virginia State University before expanding to other HBCUs.
