One person is in police custody after a deadly shooting that took place at Alabama’s Tuskegee University.

The shooting left one person, 18-year-old La’Tavion Johnson, dead, and left at least 16 others injured. At least 12 people were hurt by gunfire according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s X account.

The school reported, “Several others including Tuskegee University students were injured and are receiving treatment at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery.”

Reports state that police arrested and charged Jaquez Myrick, 25, in connection with the shooting. He is currently being held at the Montgomery County Detention Facility for another agency. “Myrick was found leaving the scene of the shooting that occurred on the campus of Tuskegee University,” the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said. “Myrick was arrested and charged federally with possession of a machine gun.”

Macon County Sheriff André Brunson believes that there is more than one suspect. “If you’ve seen some of the videos, there was shooting all over the place. So, I think there will be multiple suspects,” he said. “We’re going to deal with it and try to get every last one of them.”

The shooting began around 1:40 a.m. on the Macon County campus during the end of the school’s centennial homecoming festivities. Officials are asking for people who have any information about the shooting to reach out to investigators.

Tuskegee University canceled classes on Monday as the police are still processing the scene.
