Before being reintroduced to the world on sitcom, Abbott Elementary, Tyler James Williams was the star of the 2000’s sitcom, Everybody Hates Chris. Williams played the childhood version of Chris Rock, surrounded by his family. America’s Got Talent host, Terry Crews, played alongside Williams as his father. Now Crews is opening up about his time with the young actor and how proud he is of his growth.

Williams is one of this year’s TIME 100 Next honorees. Each honoree is given a dedication written by peers in the industry. Crews wrote an essay about his time working with Williams at the age of 13 for the tribute.

He opened up his tribute by sharing that he was nervous stepping into the role of Julius, as it was his first time on screen. He was warned that the biggest obstacles on set were kids and animals so he kept that in mind.

“Then we had our first scenes together,” Crews said. “Tyler delivered his lines effortlessly, his comedic instincts razor-sharp. And when he was done working, he broke out into a big, beautiful smile.”

He continued to share his praises about the actor.

“That Tyler has grown into a brilliant talent is no surprise,” Crews continued. “I ran into him last year and told him how proud and thankful I am to have worked with someone who, at such a young age, carried the show. He gave me that smile.”

Crews also admitted in his essay that as a father, he was concerned about children who grow up in Hollywood. Williams proved to him that there is hope in child stars.

“Tyler has always been comfortable with himself, and it’s why he’ll continue to shine,” he concluded.

Since then, Willaims has been a part of several projects such as The Walking Dead and Criminal Minds.
