On September 18, the legendary rap group The Lox celebrated another milestone as their classic single “Money, Power, & Respect” was officially certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The track, released in March 1998, originally featured rap heavyweights DMX and Lil’ Kim. It became an anthem in the late ’90s and cemented The Lox’s place in hip-hop history.
The track first achieved gold certification just a month after its release and is also the title track of The Lox’s debut album, which went platinum in October 1999. Reflecting on their journey since, Jadakiss said to Billboard in 2020, “We’re better, we’re seasoned. Back then we were young and rhyming for long amounts of time without understanding song structure.”
The Lox Journey from Yonkers to Platinum
The Lox, formed by Yonkers natives Jadakiss, Styles P, and Sheek Louch in 1994, were propelled into the spotlight with the help of Mary J. Blige, who secured them a record deal with Bad Boy Records. “Money, Power, & Respect” showcased their raw lyrical talent and street-heavy content. The song became an anthem, representing the ambition of many in the streets. The group’s chemistry and authenticity set them apart, earning them a reputation as one of the best rap groups of their era.
Speaking on their evolution, Styles P noted, “We’re like wine, we’re getting better with time. Staying relevant and lyrical in this industry is rare, but it shows who we are.”
Legacy and Growth
The Lox continues to thrive decades later, despite changing music trends and challenges. Their recent performance on NPR’s Tiny Desk series further proves their staying power. They performed hits including “Money, Power, & Respect” in a stripped-down set, demonstrating their growth while maintaining their signature edge. As Jadakiss remarked, “We’re fathers, business owners, and entrepreneurs now, but we still have the same edge.”
With their platinum plaque and ongoing 30th-anniversary tour, The Lox remains a force in hip-hop.
