Renowned R&B artist and philanthropist Usher Raymond IV is set to deliver the keynote address at Emory University’s 180th Commencement ceremony on May 12, 2025. In recognition of his contributions to music and community service, the university will honor him with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.
The Celebrated Career of Usher
Usher’s musical journey began at the age of 12 when he moved to Atlanta to pursue his passion. Since releasing his self-titled debut album at 15, he has become one of the best-selling artists in music history. His accolades include eight Grammy Awards and nine number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, featuring songs like “Yeah!” and “U Got It Bad.” In 2024, he headlined the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show, following a successful Las Vegas residency with 100 sold-out performances.
Emory President Gregory L. Fenves praised Usher’s impact, stating, “There are few artists in the history of popular music who have innovated as ceaselessly as Usher.” He added that Usher’s “peerless talent as a singer, songwriter, and dancer” has allowed him to connect profoundly with generations of fans.
Commitment to Youth Empowerment
Beyond his musical achievements, Usher has demonstrated a strong commitment to philanthropy. In 1999, he founded Usher’s New Look (UNL), an Atlanta-based nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering under-resourced youth. The organization has reached over 55,000 teens, helping them identify their passions, complete their education, and serve their communities.
Usher expressed his enthusiasm for addressing Emory’s graduates, saying, “I have spent my life following my spark—my passion—and trying to support young people as they find and follow their own passions.” He continued, “I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to speak to these incredible Emory students as they graduate and prepare to make their mark on the world.”
UNL collaborates with Emory’s Goizueta Business School to offer programs like “Powered by Service,” which introduces middle school students to leadership and financial literacy. For high school students, the Leadership Academy provides a comprehensive four-year training program focused on graduation, college preparation, and community service.
According to the nonprofit, 100% of Leadership Academy participants graduate from high school, with 98% continuing to college. Of those, 86% are first-generation college students. President Fenves highlighted the partnership, stating, “New Look fills a critical need by stepping up to help students realize their potential. Emory University has been proud to partner with this incredible organization over the years.”
The commencement ceremony will take place on the Emory Quadrangle, marking a significant milestone for the Class of 2025. Usher’s participation underscores the university’s commitment to honoring individuals who have made substantial contributions to society through their professional and philanthropic endeavors.
