The iconic Scary Movie franchise is making a triumphant return, with the Wayans brothers reuniting to bring back the beloved horror-comedy. The reboot is officially set to hit theaters on June 12, 2026, with Paramount Pictures and Miramax joining forces to revive the series.

“We couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the new Scary Movie and work with each other again,” the Wayans brothers said in a joint statement. “This is a franchise we created more than 20 years ago. We remember people laughing in the aisles and hope to see that happen again.”

The reboot marks the first time in 18 years that Marlon, Shawn, and Keenen Ivory Wayans will collaborate to write and produce the film. Keenen, who directed the original Scary Movie in 2000, is returning to helm the project. The trio is also teaming up with Rick Alvarez to bring their vision to life.

A Comedy Legacy Returns

The original Scary Movie debuted in 2000 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon. A parody of popular teen horror films like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, it shattered records by earning $42.5 million during its opening weekend. At the time, it was the highest-grossing R-rated horror-comedy and the most successful debut for a film directed by a Black filmmaker.

Following its blockbuster success, the Wayans brothers released Scary Movie 2 in 2001, which grossed $141.2 million globally. However, creative control over the series was later lost due to a controversial deal with former Miramax head Harvey Weinstein. Marlon Wayans has openly criticized the arrangement, stating it diminished the essence of the franchise.

With Miramax now under the leadership of Jonathan Glickman, the reboot offers the brothers a chance to reclaim their creation. Glickman expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “We are thrilled to reunite Scary Movie with the Wayans brothers, the brilliant creators behind the beloved franchise. The timing is perfect to bring back the series.”

Marlon Wayans also shared his excitement on Instagram, calling the announcement “long overdue.” Fans eagerly anticipate this “double reunion” as the brothers aim to deliver the laughs that first made Scary Movie a household name.

Mark your calendars for June 12, 2026—Scary Movie is coming home.
