Serena Williams has faced a heartbreaking conclusion during her match in Wimbledon.
Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam champion had to forfeit from the first round of her match after suffering a leg injury. During the time of the injury, Williams held a 3-1 lead against her opponent Aliaksandra Sasnovich.
Reports state that William had slipped on wet grass from an earlier rainfall and left the match to be seen by the trainer. She showed that she was visibly in pain once she fell to the ground.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion was forced to leave the court and gave fans an emotional goodbye. This was the first time she had to retire from a match since playing in Wimbledon.
Williams shared her emotions on her Instagram page. In the caption of her post she wrote, “I was heartbroken to have to withdraw today after injuring my right leg. My love and gratitude are with the fans and the team who make being on centre court so meaningful. Feeling the extraordinary warmth and support of the crowd today when I walked on and off the court meant the world to me.”
